My mission

Is to provide high quality bass lessons to students and performers at any level to guide them towards their bass playing and musical goals.

When you choose to work with me, we embark on a collaborative journey to pursue and achieve your specific goals. I understand that each student is unique, with individual aspirations and areas of focus. That’s why I prioritize creating a personalized practice routine that is specially designed to achieve your goals. Whether you aim to master specific techniques, explore different genres, prepare for performances, or simply enhance your overall musicianship, our sessions will be tailored to suit your preferences.

Through a collaborative effort, I will develop a practice routine that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle, ensuring that you stay motivated and engaged. I firmly believe that a tailored approach to learning produces the best results, and I am dedicated to helping you reach your full potential as a bass player.

Discovering and mastering a musical instrument is an exhilarating and fulfilling journey that stimulates our minds to think in fresh, creative ways. Regardless of whether you’re a beginner or have been honing your skills for years, receiving instruction from a seasoned teacher and accomplished musician is the most effective approach to elevate your abilities and achieve your specific goals. Whether it’s face-to-face or via technology-mediated lessons, you can access regular and reliable sessions with a teacher who delivers high-quality instruction, employing a customized syllabus tailored to enhance your musical knowledge, technique and achieve your own goals.

Online lessons?

Here’s why I’m an advocate of online education: the influence of technology on education has been evident for quite some time. While Skype lessons have been around, it wasn’t until the pandemic that I truly embraced the concept of online and remote teaching. The global crisis demonstrated to both students and educators that online learning can and should be just as impactful as face-to-face instruction. Engaging in lessons through platforms like Zoom offers numerous advantages, making the experience equivalent to in-person sessions while also providing additional benefits such as:

– Learning from the comfort of your own home
– Zero travel time.
– Record and store each lesson on your computer for future reference with ease.
– Become proficient with industry standard technology

Providing online lessons removes the accessibility barrier many people encounter. Growing up in a small town with limited access to music education and quality instruction, I understand the significance of offering my services to people across the entire country, rather than confining them to those residing solely in Melbourne. Online lessons foster a sense of increased student accountability, promoting the development of good habits that are often overlooked during the process of learning an instrument.

While I strongly support online learning, I also provide the option of in-person lessons at my teaching studio in Eaglemont. Situated conveniently within walking distance of Eaglemont and Heidelberg train stations, it offers easy access for students. *Please note that spots available for in-person lessons are limited.

8 week lesson term

Why do I insist on an 8 week term as opposed to ad-hoc lessons? Quite simply, it gets results. All of our favourite musicians share a common trait: dedicating consistent time to practice and self-review.

By scheduling lessons with me, you are making a deliberate choice to cultivate positive habits, invest in yourself and prioritise your passion. There are many tropes about learning an instrument such as “21 days to build a habit” or “10000 hours to mastery.” While there may be some truth to these notions for certain individuals, one principle applies universally: learning an instrument requires maintaining consistent effort and fostering good habits.

Learning an instrument is an enriching journey that requires commitment and consistency. Students who embrace regular practice consistently achieve the greatest success. Booking a term of bass lessons will enhance your confidence and help you overcome moments of self-doubt and waning motivation. Consistency is the key to building lasting habits, and with consistency comes tangible results.

Left Hand Technique – Richard wrote a book on it so expect to hear a lot about this in lessons.

Repertoire – Learning repertoire is crucial to any students development. It’s also fun. Richard’s goal is to to teach you how to teach yourself. Students who are interested only in learning repertoire are urged to sign up to the “Classic Basslines” group classes.

Sight reading & Ear Training – No student ever regrets developing their sight reading and aural skills but most students shy away from these areas because they are confronting. Richard can help demystify these skills with step by step guidance so you don’t become overwhelmed.

“I first started having bass lessons with Richard 2014. Richard was able to keep my love for certain genres of music all while guiding me through ‘Rockschool’ graded exams and eventually up to VCE 3/4 Music Performance exams. For a bass player who was only interested in playing rock music, Richard helped me to gain an understanding and love for bassists such as Carol Kaye, James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius and Victor Wooten. Overall, I am so grateful to Richard for helping me foster a lifelong love for bass guitar. Any student would be incredibly lucky to have Richard as their teacher.”

“I started lessons with Richard when I was 11 years old. I’m 20 years old now and I still play bass several hours a day. He teaches you more than just the instrument, he teaches you to love the intricacies of music and the subtle power the bass holds in a mix. His lessons are highly catered to your needs, mixing between sight reading, learning music by ear, or my personal favorite, just straight up jamming to a beat. With his repertoire of wide musical tastes (from the super tight, punchy bass lines of Vulfpeck, to the absolutely dirty, head banging riffs from Rage Against The Machine) Richard Rose’s bass lessons are for sure guaranteed to inspire passion in the next generation of bass players.”
