Richard Rose Music
Hi there! I’m Richard, an electric bassist from Melbourne. The purpose of this website is to showcase my past, present and future musical endeavours; not only live performances and studio recordings, but also to access my private tuition services and educational material.
Richard Rose is a Naarm/Melbourne based bassist whose practice draws on jazz, funk, hip-hop, folk, and Ethio-jazz. Over the past 15 years Richard has carved out a unique position in Melbourne’s thriving music scene, performing and recording extensively with artists including Stella Anning, John Flanagan, The Black Jesus Experience, Sal Kimber, Standing Circle and Benny Walker. A versatile and expressive musician, Richard is at home in improvised settings, bringing a strong sense of groove, musicality, and collaboration to every performance.

Standing Circle – (Self Titled) (2026)
Standing Circle is a place.
It’s everywhere and nowhere.
Sound becomes the vehicle that transports us into a land beyond time, a state of mind free from gravity, where audience, musicians, and surroundings merge into one.
Do you ever dream of floating in the air?
Does it give you a sense of remembering?
Mirrors are broken and all is one. We are you and you are us.
Gravity on Earth and gravity on the brain are a duality. Music, rhythm, and breathing are some of the tools to access this realm.
Compositions are never the same twice. They are an excuse to depart.
Each song is a castle.
This record captures the band’s spirit as it truly is: ever-changing, ever-evolving.
“This is how we sounded that day but music is just a hat.”

“Richard is an accomplished bass player and educator. His methods encourage students to be self-motivated and knowledgeable bass students. Richard is highly informed of a range of bass methodologies, while also having a clear vision of the consistency and diligence required to become a versatile bass player and musician. I have been studying with Richard over a period of three years and have benefited greatly from his clear instruction – not to mention his patience and good humour.”
“It was truly a great experience to spend some time with Richard. I think he is quite quick to identify where the areas of opportunity in your playing are, and he tries to tailor the program to those things you struggle the most with. In my case, it was building up practice habits and practice exercises, and he gave me a bunch of options to choose from and showed me how I could derive my own routine from exercises that have worked for him. On top of just the theory-related stuff, he’s a hell of a guy and he makes the classes very fun and oriented around the players and genres you enjoy. I could not recommend him enough.”
“Richard taught my teenage son bass guitar. I was impressed by how quickly my son advanced. Richard has a beautiful temperament and clearly has a very musical soul that rubs off onto students. I have been a musician for 30 years and I highly recommend him for musicians at any level.”
“Richard is an exceptional teacher with an extremely high level of musical skill, but just as importantly, he has a fantastic manner: patient, encouraging, thoughtful and genuinely invested in his students’ progress. From the very first lesson he took the time to really listen to what I wanted (improving technique, starting to read music, and re-learning scales etc), and every lesson since has been focused, purposeful and tailored directly to these.
One thing that really sets Richard apart is his commitment to non-rote learning. Rather than just giving you tabs and sending you on your way, he makes efforts to help you understand deeper which has massively improved my grasp of music theory in a very short space of time. The quality of his teaching resources is also outstanding; most of them are self-written and very clearly structured, making it easy to build on each lesson and practice effectively between sessions.”
